Silent Tactic Surges From Near Last to Win Oaklawn Southwest Stakes
Silent Tactic rallied from near last to win the Grade 3 Southwest Stakes, earning 20 Kentucky Derby points and a $495,000 winner's share.

Silent Tactic produced a dramatic late bid to charge from near the back and capture the Grade 3 Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park, covering 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.85 and drawing off by 3 1/4 lengths. Jockey Cristian A. Torres guided the Mark E. Casse trainee through traffic, moving into sixth at the top of the stretch and passing nine horses in the final three-sixteenths to post the hard-charging, widening victory.
The 12-horse field went to the gate after scratches of Litmus Test and Bricklin, and Reclamation was eased during the running. Soldier N Diplomat closed to finish second by a head, with Bob Baffert trainee Buetane another nose back in third. Silent Tactic paid $26.00 to win, returned $12.60 to place and $6.80 to show, while Soldier N Diplomat returned $9.00 and $5.00 for place and show. The winner earned the $495,000 top prize from the $1,000,000 purse, boosting Silent Tactic’s career earnings to $594,422 and his record to 4-2-2-0.
The Oaklawn result reshuffles the Kentucky Derby picture. Silent Tactic collected the maximum 20 Derby qualifying points for the Southwest and now sits on 25 points after finishing second in the Smarty Jones Stakes on Jan. 3. That positions Silent Tactic as a legitimate Derby contender as the Oaklawn series continues toward the Rebel Stakes and Arkansas Derby, the next major stepping stones on the 3-year-old trail.

Silent Tactic’s pedigree and sale history add business context to the performance. Bred in Kentucky out of the Gun Runner mare Magical Sign and by sire Tacitus, who earned graded stakes placings in the 2019 Triple Crown season, Silent Tactic carries a sire line standing for a modest $5,000 stud fee. Bloodstock activity on the colt drew attention: Bloodhorse reported that Justin Casse purchased Silent Tactic for $500,000 at the OBS April sale from the Thorostock consignment, while Thoroughbreddailynews also noted a prior Thorostock purchase for $60,000 at a Fasig-Tipton October sale before a $500,000 OBS transaction. The jump in valuation underscores the speculative and high-stakes nature of juvenile pinhooking and the broader commercial engine behind the Derby pipeline.
Trainer Mark E. Casse continues to capitalize on Oaklawn opportunities; his team notched multiple winners on the card, and Casse offered a concise plan about the immediate future: "We'll figure it out, but we're not leaving Oaklawn." For owners, trainers, and bettors, Silent Tactic’s surge is a reminder that pace dynamics and late acceleration can transform longshots into major players, and that a single performance at a key prep can recalibrate sales-market narratives and Derby projections alike. The next decision on whether Silent Tactic tackles the Rebel Stakes will determine how this Oaklawn charge fits into the larger road to Churchill Downs.
